Returning from Absenteeism - Mind Healing Centre
Joanna's Master Degree Project
The aim of the thesis is to design a space for people suffering depression and anxiety
caused by contemporary, strongly connected to technology and social media, lifestyle, that
would help them find an inspiration, as well as create a platform for social interactions to
improve and shorten healing process.
In order to achieve this goal, the problem of stigmatization of mental health facilities that
holds people back from seeking help was faced. The proposed solution for this issue is a
project of Mind Healing Centre that completely breaks away from the stereotype of the
asylum. The facility located in a city centre, in a walking distance from young people's
clusters, will collect together public and private functions and create a completely new
relationship between society and mental health facility.
The building design is also moving away from the adopted stereotype. Due to very specific
constraints of the site, there is a possibility to create the centre with no boundaries between
outside and inside, where water and vegetation creates a natural barrier between the facility
and the rest of the city.
Additionally, the building is designed based on Evidence-Based Design principles, that
maximize the restorative abilities of space, minimizing cost and time of the therapy. The huge
amount of greenery inside and outside, big amount of light, courtyard model to allow patients
to go outside and carry some therapies on the fresh air.
